Mapo is a web application optimised for the following browsers
If your internet browser is different from those listed above, please download one of them by clicking on the logo of your chosen browser. The download is free and only takes a few minutes.
The Mapo Driver mobile app is available on Android and iOS devices.
Types of vehicles
For each vehicle category and each type of road, an average speed is calculated based on multiple studies. This average speed takes into account time spent stopped at traffic lights or in traffic. It does not take into account time spent looking for parking spaces or carrying out the mission.
Note
For the calculation of average speed in Mapo, the Light Vehicle profile uses several pieces of information to determine speeds on each road segment. If the speed limit is provided in OpenStreetMap, it is used. Otherwise, a weighting is applied depending on the type of road. Then, the speed in urban or business areas, and even more so in city centres, is reduced. Finally, OpenStreetRoutingMap itself uses several parameters: for each turn, traffic light, lane width, and road surface type, penalties are applied.
Fastest route
The calculator is based on the shortest travel time.
- For light vehicles (LV) under 3.5 t:
- in urban areas and outskirts, this average speed is 18 km/h
- in inter-urban areas (outside urban areas, for example: routes across a district, county or more), this average speed is 30 km/h.
- For heavy goods vehicles (HGV) over 3.5 t, the default speed is set by HERE maps (formerly Nokia Map), specialists in HGV transit. Route planning and optimisation are based on roads suitable for HGVs.
- For bikes, the average speed is between 16km/h and 20km/h. Cycle routes are planned for cargo bikes.
- For pedestrians, the average speed is between 4km/h and 5km/h.
These default times and speeds can be adjusted and weighted in the Speed Adjustment field (in the Global Settings or in the settings for each vehicle).
Shortest route
The calculator is based on the route with the fewest kilometres.
This option is currently only available for light vehicles (LV).
Mapping
Due to its reliability, frequency of updates and the ability to interact with the map, Mapo has chosen open digital mapping OpenStreetMap for light vehicles. This is to offer Mapo users the best tool available on the market.
Although OpenStreetMap is updated daily by a large community of public and private contributors, some areas may have information that is not up to date. This is because roads and traffic plans are constantly evolving or changing.
For your information, it is estimated that 200,000 new addresses are created every year in France.
If certain roads or street directions, for example, are not up to date, you can make changes directly on OpenStreetMap (follow the link and instructions). We can provide training on how to use the map update tool. You can also contact us so we can update the map based on your information.
Geocoding
Geocoding involves assigning geographic coordinates (longitude/latitude) to a text address. Mapo includes automatic geocoding as one of its features.
Although we use the best geocoding services available on the market, it is your responsibility to enter your addresses correctly (street number, full street name without abbreviations, etc.) so that the geocoding service can interpret them correctly and place them in the right location on the map.
The quality of addresses is especially important when importing large files. Importing large files into Mapo may therefore require you to check that your addresses are correctly positioned on the map (see geocoding quality index).
In this case, you can move the point directly on the map to place it in the correct location. For imports that do not require any checks, you can also include the GPS coordinates of your addresses in your file.
Optimisation
Mapo uses the most relevant optimisation algorithms available today. We have limited the calculation time dedicated to optimisation in order to strike a balance between optimisation accuracy and calculation time.
If the order of the route planned and optimised automatically by Mapo seems to need adjustments, you can change the order manually by dragging and dropping.
